Solar PV feed in tariff
the feed in tariff (FIT) was originally designed to give a financial incentive in order to encourage the move to sources of renewable energy in the UK, but it is not a permanent incentive.
Although once you are registered and receiving the FIT you will continue to do so for 25yrs, there will be a reduction in the tariff for new installations (by about 8.5%) fitted after March 2012.
Now is the best time to look into installing solar pv panels for your home, so that you enjoy the highest financial incentive for generating free electricity from solar pv panels.
Installing a solar pv system for your home is potentially the best investment a homeowner can make, as it gives tax free, guaranteed, index linked income for the 25 years.
How the solar pv Feed in Tariff works: how much income do I get?
The basic tariff of 43.3p is guaranteed for 25 years . This is from the original date that the MCS certified solar pv system is registered with your utility provider.
it’s index linked, which means it increases with inflation each year so it does not loose its value over time.
Payment is made to the you from your chosen utility company, normally quarterly and initially the utility company will estimate the output based on your MCS certificate declared power output. They may also assume you export 50% of the power generated until they read the meter.
As part of your solar pv system, you will have an additional meter installed that measures the power generated from the panels, this will be the meter that the utility company will eventually read in order to calculate your FIT amounts.

UK Government proposed changes to solar PV Feed-in-Tariffs
The UK Government is proposing to reduce Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) for new solar photovoltaic (PV) installations under a comprehensive review consultation.
If you install solar PV and your FITs application is received by your FIT supplier on or after 12th December 2011, you could be affected by the proposals.
In broad terms if consumers install Solar PV panels and the solar panel system registration with the utility provider takes place after 12th december2011 they could be affected by the proposed changes, which are generally as follows:
Install & register pre 12/12/2011
43.3p per kw/h (higher rate)
Install & register from 12/12/2011
43.3p until 31/03/2012,
21.00p from 01/04/2012
Finalisation of these figures remains subject to review . However, if you are considering installing solar panels for your home after 12th December 2011 then it is recommended that you base your decision on the proposed lower rates of feed in tariff,
Please confirm with your installer at the time of survey which prevailing FIT rate you are eligible to receive
